INTRODUCING: Charne
How long have you been at fortis?
1 year, 12 months exactly on 14th November (woohoo!!).
What motivated you to join fortis?
My good friend Emma motivated me to join.
Can you remember your very first WOD?
Actually No, I cheated and had look back at the photo! I remember being in absolute awe of all the members that were lifting barbells… I had never done Cross Fit, or anything like it, before and watching them was really inspiring! I quickly realised that I wanted to be like them . . .
and I also realised my friend Emma was way stronger than I thought!
What is your favourite work out or lift and why?
Oooooh that’s a hard one… power cleans would have to one of my favourites… anything with the word power in its gotta be good, right? Love the progression you can get with this lift.
What is your most hated workout or lift?
I don’t really ‘hate‘ any of the work outs … I definitely find anything to do with press ups and pull ups pretty challenging though!
What are your goals for this year?
In April this year I ruptured my ACL (Anterior cruciate ligament) in my right knee while playing netball, I was told that surgery wasn’t an option, and had to have several weeks off training.
The injury has been a bit of a life changer for me, I’m usually pretty active. However, through Fortis Fitness and their functional fitness style programming I’ve been able to get mobile again. Now, I’m even matching or in some cases, even beating some of my pre-injury PB’s (personal bests), so I’m pretty happy with that.
My goal now is to to beat all my scores that I set before I injured my knee, AND to master pull-ups … Ringing that BELL!!
What surprising things have you learned about yourself since joining fortis/starting cross fit?
I’ve learned that I can actually get up at 5am, 3 times a week! Haha. I’ve also learned that I actually have biceps…
What are you enjoying most about training at fortis?
I love the positive encouraging atmosphere!
It doesn’t matter if you have a serious injury or not, the trainers scale the workouts for you so you can still get involved and feel good about yourself once you’ve accomplished it!
Fortis has been my saviour through this whole knee ordeal, and if it wasn’t for the team at Fortis, there is absolutely no way that I would be as mobile or strong as I am today ?
I LOVE the variety of workouts and exercises, it keeps us challenged and learning new things every week! Best of all I get to do it with my friend!
Whats your one piece of advice for anyone thinking of starting out?
Honestly, it doesn’t matter what level of fitness you are at, there is a place for everyone at Fortis. Come and give it a go! You’ll feel great afterwards!
Tell us one interesting fact or something we don’t know about you?
Not many people know that I represented New Zealand at Waka-ama (Outrigging) at the World Champs in 2006 and won 3 bronze medals ?
