Fortis Monthly Series - May: Training That Sticks 💥
Each month, we’re focusing on one idea that helps you train more consistently, move better and get more from your time in the gym. These aren’t complex strategies - just practical shifts that make a real difference when applied week after week.
This month, we’re starting with consistency.
You Don’t Need More Motivation - You Need Fewer Decisions
Most people think consistency comes from motivation. It doesn’t.
Motivation is unpredictable. Some days you feel fired up. Other days you’re tired, busy, stressed or just not in the mood. If your training relies on motivation, you’ll always be negotiating with yourself.
The people who train consistently at Fortis aren’t more motivated - they’ve just removed the number of decisions they need to make. Less thinking. More showing up.
Where Consistency Usually Breaks Down
It rarely happens in the middle of a workout. It happens before you even leave the house.
You’re deciding:
Should I go this morning or tonight?
I’m tired… maybe I’ll skip today
I didn’t pack my gear
I don’t know what the workout is
I’m sore… maybe I should wait
Every one of those moments is a decision point. And the more decisions you have to make, the easier it is to choose not to train.
Consistency isn’t about discipline - it’s about removing friction.
The Fewer Decisions Approach
Here’s what we see from members who train regularly, even when life is busy.
They decide once - then repeat.
They train the same days every week
They attend the same class time
They pack their bag in advance
They default to a scaling option when they’re tired
They show up without overthinking the workout
They’ve already made the hard decisions. The rest is just following the plan.
Make Training Your Default, Not Your Debate
When training becomes your default, it stops being a daily negotiation.
You don’t ask Do I feel like going? You simply think It’s Tuesday - I train.
That shift alone removes a huge mental barrier.
This is also why routine beats intensity. You don’t need to crush every session. You just need to keep showing up. Some of your best long-term progress comes from the days you nearly didn’t come but did anyway.
Progress Comes From Imperfect Sessions
One of the biggest traps is thinking you need to feel ready. You don’t.
Tired sessions count
Scaled sessions count
Short sessions count
Low-energy sessions count
They all build momentum. And momentum is what turns training into a habit.
If you only train when you feel motivated, you’ll always be starting over.
Call to Action 🚨
This coming month, choose your training days in advance and lock them in. Tell coach or a gym buddy. Put them in your calendar. Treat them like an appointment.
Then focus on one thing: just showing up.

Fortis Community Round-Up
The last couple of months have been packed with big efforts, exciting milestones and plenty of moments worth celebrating across the Fortis community.
From competition floors to running events, kids and teens classes and members stepping outside their comfort zones, it’s been awesome seeing so many people challenging themselves in different ways.
NZ Masters Team Competition 🏆
A huge shout out to everyone who represented Fortis at the NZ Masters Team Competition.
These events are always about more than just results. They’re about showing up, backing your teammates, competing hard and proving that training and performance don’t have an expiry date.
Masters League Finals Qualifiers 🥇
Massive congratulations to Renee and Claude for qualifying for the Masters League Finals in Australia later this year.
Punching a ticket to an international finals event is no small feat and is a reflection of the consistency, hard work and commitment they’ve both put into their training. We’re incredibly proud to have you representing Fortis on the big stage and can’t wait to follow the journey over the coming months.
Fit Kids & Teen Angels Back for Term 2 😊
Term 2 is officially underway and it’s been awesome having our Fit Kids and Teen Angels back in the gym. The energy these amazing young athletes bring to the gym each week is pretty special and we’re excited for another great term ahead.
Napier Half Marathon & 10km Events 🏃♀
A big well done to everyone from the Fortis crew who took part in the Napier Half Marathon and 10km events last weekend!
Whether it was your first running event or another race added to the calendar, getting out there and challenging yourself deserves recognition. Special mention has to go to Emma from our Teen Angels who completed her very first 10km run. That’s a massive achievement and such an awesome example of what consistent effort and confidence can build over time.
We’re incredibly proud of you Emma ❤️
Looking Ahead: Butterfly Effect Competition in June
Next up, we’ve got the Butterfly Effect competition coming up in June and Fortis will have two teams of awesome women competing. We can’t wait to see our teams out on the floor representing the gym 💥
Final Thoughts
One of the coolest things about Fortis is that success looks different for everyone.
For some, it’s qualifying for an international competition
For others, it’s completing a first 10km run
For others, it’s simply showing up consistently and building confidence week after week
Every one of those things matters.
Thanks to everyone who continues to contribute to the energy and community we’re building at Fortis.
