Thinking About Your First Competition? Start Here 👍
Competition season is coming up and if you’ve ever thought I’d love to give that a go… but then immediately followed it with but I’m nowhere near ready, this one’s for you.
Here’s the thing: You don’t have to be the fittest person in the gym to enter a competition.
You just need to find the right challenge for where you’re at.
Pick a challenge, not a mountain
Your first competition doesn’t need to be the biggest, hardest or most intimidating event you can find.
Look for something that feels challenging but achievable.
That might be a HYROX event. It might be a local functional fitness competition. It might be sign up with a mate so you can share the experience.
The goal of your first competition isn't necessarily to stand on the podium.
It might simply be to find out what you can do.
You don't need to wait until you're fit enough
One of the biggest traps is thinking you need to get competition-ready before you enter a competition.
Training for something gives your training purpose. Suddenly that session you've been doing every week has a reason behind it. You have something to work towards. You start paying attention to the things that will make a difference.
And you learn a lot about yourself along the way.
Train smart
Once you've picked your event, you can start thinking about what it actually requires.
Strength? 💪 Yep
Cardio? 👟Absolutely
But also things like:
pacing yourself
moving efficiently
knowing the movements
working through fatigue
recovering between efforts
staying calm when things get uncomfortable
That's where good training comes in.
You don't need to smash yourself every session. You need to build the skills and fitness that your event actually demands.
And don't forget the fun bit 🎉
Competition can be a brilliant way to challenge yourself, meet people and do something a little outside your normal routine. Bring a mate. Find a team. Cheer someone else on. Enjoy the atmosphere. And remember why you signed up in the first place.
You're there to challenge yourself - not to prove anything to anyone else.
So if you've been thinking about giving a competition a go, maybe this is your sign.
Pick something. Give yourself a goal. Then let's get to work 💥
